It’s Tariff Time
It appears that the automakers didn’t read my open letter to them last week, or take it to heart, because at midnight last night, Trump’s economy-crushing tariffs went into effect. That amounts to an additional 10% tariff on goods coming from China, and a whopping 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico.
Remember, a tariff is a tax paid by U.S. businesses to import these goods.
Additionally, retaliatory tariffs from China and Canada hit with immediate effect, and Mexico said its retaliatory tariffs will hit on Sunday. While those tariffs will be paid by the companies that import our goods into their country, it should dramatically reduce foreign demand for our goods. Since we need to export goods to have a growing economy, this would be not ideal.
